Fishing at our Spanish Holiday Villa

The lake at Iznajar was created in the early sixties by flooding the valley below and around the town. A dam was constructed at the western end.It extends approx 30 kms from east to west and has several islands and inlets. Access to the waters edge can be difficult but there several large access points by car, one in particular being a man made beach area providing picnic and barbecue facilities.

Only sailing dingies and non motorised boats are allowed on the lake. It is very deep in places and can be in excess of 150ft.

The average size for Carp and Barbel isThe lake holds massive shoals of fish, the main species being common Carp. Other species include Barbel, Tench, Pike, Black Bass, Mullet and Trout. Some of the shoals of Carp and Barbel have to be seen to be believed and when connecting with such a shoal you are guaranteed an arm aching days fishing!, 100lb bags are the norm! in the 3-5lb range with a good head of specimens 15lbs plus.

Basically all methods will work! Bearing in mind the great depths when float fishing sliders are effective. Feeder and pole are also effective but beware – tackle is easily broken.
All terminal tackle should be stepped up with a minimum of 6lb line and hooks in the size 12-4 range. The renowned fighting Irish bream are minnows compared to these fish!.Spinners and plugs are effective for black bass and pike.

Best baits include sweetcorn, meat, worm, bread, seed baits and boilies.
Ground bait can be purchased locally.

The best months are March to November, but be warned the Summer months temperatures can be in the mid 40s so an umberella is a must!.The lake also holds a large population of Terrapins/fresh water turtles which can be a nuisance as they have a particular liking for meat/corn.Snakes are also present on the lakeside, some of which are venomous so best left well alone!.

Licences are required, for more information on local registrations and licensing contact your host. Finally – very little English is spoken in the area so a few basic spanish words will be useful.Hasta Luego – Gary Websters Fishing Guide

‘Dear Lisa and NigeJust a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our week with you back in early August. We were SO impressed with both the apartment (which was very well appointed with the fridge, kettle, welcome pack etc) AND the freedom that we found to do what we want, when we wanted, with no hassle.Knowing that you were usually around was good too for those little queries about directions and places to go etc . Your attention to detail made a big difference. Many thanks to Nige for taking us and some of the other guests canoeing on lake Iznajar, that was really different for us. It is such a beautiful area and we especially liked the Torcal where we walked for hours with the dog. He slept well that night! The fishing on the lake was brilliant too and (once again) thanks for putting us on to Gary to show us exactly where to go for some excellent fishing. We took pictures of some of the many carp we caught. Gary was definitely right about it not making any difference as to the time of day. They were full on feeding all day!!Thanks again for a wonderful week. We will be back!!Kind regardsSteve and Mags Harding (and Cokey)’
